| Abstrakt | The main focus of the project is a detailed discussion of the material chosen in the light of critical discourse analysis informed by central aspects of postcolonial literary theory. The main discourse strategies both in favour of and against slavery will be thoroughly scrutinised, within the limits of works by British writers only. In view of the great amount of texts dealing with slavery over this period, our project concentrates on key dates (1772, 1787, 1807, and 1834). This makes it possible to combine a diachronic analysis which shows the differentiation of the arguments over the years, with a synchronic investigation which reveals the dominating argumentative patterns in the discourses around the key dates. | |
