This ÖNB project takes an exploratory mixed-methods approach to investigating the subjective well-being (SWB) of CLIL teachers in Austria at the primary, secondary, and tertiary levels. The diverse and sometimes ad hoc implementation of CLIL in Austria can in some cases pose a threat to the SWB of CLIL teachers, by challenging their self-efficacy and causing identity ambiguity leading to anxiety and perceived stress (Aiello et al. 2015, Pappa et al. 2017). Yet, in other cases, CLIL teachers report their passion for the role seeing it as an exciting opportunity for growth and positive teacher-learner relationships (Pappa et al. 2017). The study aims to achieve a greater understanding of the factors contributing to CLIL teachers’ SWB and the contextual factors which may explain why some CLIL teachers ‘flourish’, whereas others ‘flounder’ in these roles.
