Many psychological theories are expressed verbally, precluding rigorous testing and hampering communication and
progress. In contrast, formal models are expressed in unambiguous terms that allow deriving testable predictions and
seeking practical applications. There is a continuing trend to developing sophisticated technologies for research and data
analysis, and these advances are quickly changing how research is conducted and how models are formulated and tested
in psychological research. These developments demand significant training of mathematical and computational skills to
perform competitive research on classic and emerging topics in psychology. This interdisciplinary IP pools resources and
expertise from different universities to create a unique program and provide an interdisciplinary platform for a successful
interaction of psychology, mathematics, and computer science. The main purpose of this IP is to teach competences in
mathematical and computational modelling in psychology, also focusing on the encouragement of critical reading of the
literature and the promotion of best-practice approaches to fitting and testing models of psychological processes. The IP
has an interdisciplinary character at the cross-roads of scientific areas covering aspects of human behaviour and it is aimed
at graduate students in these areas. Student participation in the IP is rewarded with 5 ECTS. The IP unfolds in two stages:
(1) specifically guided preparatory studies taking place at each partner's location before (2) a 12-day residential seminar
consisting of lectures, practical sessions, and team work. Materials used or developed along the course of these two
phases are uploaded to a website (https://sites.google.com/site/erasmusmathpsych) for permanent and unrestricted
availability to anyone with web access.
