Abstrakt

ARTIST intends to develop science education classroom practices and science teacher education (pre‐ and in‐service). It wants to establish a culture of research‐based innovations in science education. This shall be done by developing and providing courses, course materials, guides and support for science teachers to become active and reflective innovators of their classroom practices. The way suggested is Action Research. Action Research is a set of strategies for cyclically researching and innovating authentic practices (in this case science education) by the practitioners (in our case science teachers). Action Research enables teachers to reduce deficits in their teaching and develop more motivating and effective science education. This work shall be guided by evidence gained by small scale research activities. ARTIST intends to network the practitioner activities within and in between the partner countries to both provide support for the individual and to allow the newly recognised solution strategies to be of help to wider national and international audiences.

ARTIST will work in an international consortium covering a wide area of different cultural and socioeconomic conditions. This is done on purpose since we suggest that Action Research materializes differently under various cultural, educational and societal conditions. These various experiences in the application of Action Research will allow for learning from each other by respecting and reflecting different foci, activities and methodological decisions in the different participating countries. This will be the case among the partners from program countries, as well as towards the partner countries Georgia, the Philippines and Israel. This is particularly relevant within Israel, with the involvement of both Jewish and Arab sectors, as they are two very different cultural environments within the one nation.

Among the major deficits described in many reports – among others by the EU ‐ in science education, especially in the physical sciences, are poor student motivation, a misplaced perception of relevance of science teaching, and a shortage of young people embarking in careers in science and engineering. ARTIST will help to reduce these problems. Innovations and Action Research studies will mainly focus on student motivation, their perception of relevance of science learning, career orientation, and science careers preparation. For this purpose we will form networks of academic institutions for science education  research and teacher education with teachers and schools, as well as businesses (industry or SMEs). In addition a new peer-reviewed Journal called ARISE focussing on AR and Science Education will be launched.

The partner institutions will be further developed into competence centres to provide ongoing support for schools and teachers in their efforts to develop their teaching practices based on evidence. ARTIST will also contribute to raising the level of scientific literacy in the young generation for a self‐determined life and to enable the ability to democratically participate in society, today and in the future, following the EU policy of promoting science education for responsible citizenship. The studies will also focus how to best orient and prepare the learners for careers in science and engineering related
